Why is is that people cycle so much in northern european countries?
There's countries where a big chunk of the population is exposed to cycling and countris where people almost don't cycle at all.
Comparing several factors, there does not seem to be a relation to income, weather, distance...
Where cycling is more developed, there is a higher variety of ages that move by bike.
There is also a high gender gap where cycling is not developed.
The paper where this information comes from is divided in 2 parts. The first looks into the factors listed above, the second into several policies.
- Separate facilities where car traffic moves at high speed
- Traffic calming to slow down traffic

The dutch have the densest motorway network in the world.
The key to the success of cycling policies in the Netherlands, Denmark and Germany is a coordinated implementation of the multifaceted, multi-mutually reinforcing set of policies.
